About postgrad study: Interviews

search for: postgraduate courses

What should I expect at interview?

An interview gives you a chance to see the department, meet potential tutors or supervisors and possibly current students. The style of interview varies greatly with course and institution.

Interview questions

There are no set questions for postgraduate interviews but you may be asked about:

  • your reasons for choosing the particular course, department or institution you are applying to;
  • your motivations for doing further study;
  • your proposed research project;
  • the personal and academic skills you have to offer;
  • any other relevant experience (where applicable) and skills you may have;
  • your career aims and ambitions;
  • your undergraduate (or Masters level) study.

Make sure you are familiar with the research interests of academic staff in the department by looking at their web pages.

An interview, of course, is not a one-way process and you should have your own questions to ask. These might be connected with course/research requirements; tutorial or supervisory arrangements; and the likelihood and sources of financial support. You might also wish to gain confirmation that you are a suitable candidate for nomination for a grant or award.

Contact the institution's careers service to investigate the career destinations of postgraduates from that course.
