For 15-18 year olds

If you are looking for work experience as part of your schooling or to improve your CV; the following may be of help to you:

Think about what job you might like to do.  The following are suggestions on how you might find that placement:

  • local jobs paper;
  • word of mouth;
  • job centre;
  • the internet;
  • friends.

Contact human resources (HR) by letter or email stating why you want to work with that company.

If you don't hear anything after a week, follow up with a phone call.  Expect people to try not to commit.  Do not let any of these actions put you off.

When offered a placement make sure you are clear what you will be doing.  While you are still at school, they will check the company out.

Otherwise, you should check that there is a Health and Safety Policy and Employer Liability Insurance.

When your placement ends; think about what you gained.

Any job will be of help, even if it is not related to your career path.
