Derby City Credit Union is a not-for-profit company that provides financial services such as competitive loans and free budgeting advice for people living or working in Derby.
The placement scheme has been open for 3 years and has attracted students both through the Shell Step scheme and students applying speculatively. The placement scheme was set up due to the CEO recognising the importance of work experience in preparing students for the world of work. Placements are planned around the student’s skills base their development needs, and the needs of the business.
Placement students are given a real project to complete during their placement. This is outlined to them during the induction process during which a clear framework is developed, enabling the student to take ownership of the project. Key milestones, performance indicators and objectives are agreed, which are then used to track and assess work.
Students are also given a personal development plan which can cover goals from admin right through to project management and negotiation skills. These are set by the student and their line manager and are discussed in one-to-ones throughout the placement and at a formal appraisal at the end of the placement.
