HEACF Student Volunteering Awards

The first Higher Education Active Community Fund (HEACF) Student Volunteering Awards took place on Friday 5th December 2003 at Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford. The Awards, developed and managed by the Careers Research and Advisory Centre (CRAC), recognise student volunteers who have shown significant committment to, or achievement in, activities funded or initiated by the HEAFC. Over 300 students were nominated for the Awards, with 163 students (from 32 group and individual entries) being short-listed and invited to the ceremony.

Award Winners

  • students from University of York, who ran a music education group for young people, including those with severe learning difficulties
  • students from Thames Valley University who have been running a community gardening project providing help for elderly memebers of the community
  • a student from the University of Birmingham who worked with local residents' associations, local charity groups and West Midlands Police to improve student/community relations in Selly Oak.

There were also some special awards for projects that were singled out by the judges in light of their outstanding work.
